Beamline design and construction coordinator (m/f)

The ESRF is a multinational research institute, situated in Grenoble, France and financed by 19 countries mostly European. It operates a powerful synchrotron X-ray source with some 30 beamlines (instruments) covering a wide range of scientific research in fields such as biology and medicine, chemistry, earth and environmental sciences, materials and surface science, and physics. The ESRF employs about 600 staff and is organized as a French société civile.

The ESRF has initiated a project for the extension of its scientific installations and associated premises, the so-called Upgrade Programme. Studies are underway for the construction of the buildings and infrastructures for this project which covers an extension of about 24000m². In parallel to these studies the ESRF is carrying out an ambitious programme to build new beamlines with capabilities unique in the world and to refurbish many existing beamlines to maintain them at world-class levels.

 

As part of the Technical Infrastructure Division, the Buildings & Infrastructure group is now seeking to recruit a:

Beamline design and construction coordinator (m/f)

Fixed-term contract of 36 months

 

THE FUNCTION:

 

As part of the team supervising construction works in the experimental hall, you will be responsible for projects concerning the creation, modification, transfer and adaptation of beamlines in conformity with the ESRF general upgrade programme. The building programme makes provision for the creation and or relocation of eight beamlines and the organising and writing of the technical documents associated with these operations. You will be responsible for the coordination of the various technical packages (electricity, air conditioning, fluids and support) related to the infrastructures. You will supervise the studies for the design of lead hutches and control cabins and their construction.

 

This mission is split into three phases:

 

Preliminary study phase:

 

    * Participation in the definition of needs based on data provided by the scientist in charge of the project and the team’s engineer;

    * Finalise drawings for the lead structures and the technical packages.

    * Write up technical specifications for call for tenders for the construction packages for lead structures and control cabins.

    * Coordination of the drafting studies (team of two drafting technicians) for all building trades.

 

Intermediary works phase:

 

    * Set up and follow up the works planning schedule.

    * Coordinate works on site and run site meetings.

 

Final phase: reception of works:

 

The end date of works is related to the reception of the installations and the full control of lead structures, the scope of your mission includes:

 

    * Acceptance of installations

    * Finalise all technical documents for archiving.

 

 Tentative timescale

 

The building programme for this position runs from early June 2010 until June 2013.

 

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE:

 

You are a chartered engineer or you have a Masters degree in civil engineering or mechanics. You have several years’ experience on an industrial site or in building laboratories or technical premises. You are autonomous and capable of taking initiatives. You are proficient with planning software (MS Project) and a good understanding of AUTOCAD and SOLIDWORKS software would also be an asset.
